Envisioning

The fundamental objective of any deployment project is to deploy the operating system with the required applications onto each client computer. This process requires installing applications in addition to the core image. To plan the deployment project, first define the project scope and objectives. In support of this activity, this guide focuses on defining the minimum requirements as they relate to the infrastructure and client computers. The main objective of this guide is to help readers obtain a complete picture of the infrastructure and employ a process to analyze this information. Readers can then use this information to determine the project’s constraints and risks. This process also helps in creating the deployment project plan.

Figure 2 illustrates where this step occurs in the infrastructure deployment process.

Define the Initial Scope of Deployment

Every organization should have a general idea of the number of client computers that are included in its network and of the overall number of applications that run on these computers. Ideally, readers will be intimately familiar with this information; but if not, begin by using an estimated number of client computers and applications to define the initial scope of the deployment. Doing so helps establish a general idea of the duration of the project and the level of effort that will be required to perform a complete replacement of the operating system within the network. This general idea is used to create a baseline for the project. The tasks outlined in the other phases of this guide help refine this initial evaluation and identify exactly how many computers are targeted and which additional changes will be required in the network to fully support the deployment.

Milestone: Initial Scope of Deployment Defined

The Infrastructure Remediation feature team plays a crucial part in the initial evaluation of the environment. The lead team uses this analysis to create the BDD 2007 functional specification and to estimate resources and personnel required to successfully complete the BDD 2007 project. Table 2 lists the deliverables for this milestone.

Description

Initial Project Scope

An initial estimate of project scope is required by the project team for the creation of the BDD functional specification. This document will be used to estimate resources and personnel required to complete the overall project.
