Planning

The primary focus in this phase is to identify core and supplemental applications, understand the packaging techniques, and inventory and prioritize applications. In addition, application subject matter experts (SMEs) as well as files and settings must be identified. Finally, the Application Management feature team must determine the distribution techniques it will use.

Identify core and supplemental applications.

The environment typically requires multiple applications to be deployed to different computers. Some applications, such as office productivity applications, may be required on the majority of the computers. Others, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) applications, may be required on a small set of computers. Be able to identify these needs and classify applications as core or supplemental.

Understand packaging techniques.

Understand the different ways an application can be packaged for deployment and whether the package can be incorporated in the base operating system image.

Inventory applications.

Identify all applications that must be packaged for deployment before starting to create packages.

Prioritize applications.

After applications have been identified, prioritize them and create packages based on the established priority.

Identify application SMEs.

The deployment team may not be aware of all the intricacies of the various applications that will be deployed in the enterprise architecture. SMEs for the different applications can help the team understand installation and migration needs for the applications.

Identify files and settings.

Different applications may contain settings that must be implemented or migrated. SMEs can help with the identification of such settings and files that may be necessary for deploying the applications.

Choose distribution techniques

Determine how to distribute the applications that must be deployed to the enterprise architecture. Depending on the packaging method used, deploy applications in conjunction with the operating system image or after the image is deployed.

Automate application deployment.

Make sure that application deployment occurs without user interaction. Create the deployment packages for different applications, using the most appropriate packaging technology.

Address application-security requirements.

Some applications run fine within the user’s security context. Others may require specific privileges to run. Identify and configure desktop applications so that they meet the required security settings.

Repackage applications.

Some applications are not available for deployment through a Microsoft Windows Installer (.msi) package. The Application Management feature team may have to repackage such applications as .msi files to take advantage of all the features available to an .msi-based installation.

Integrate core applications with BDD 2007.

Core applications will be available to most computers, so their deployment should be integrated with the operating system image deployment. For this integration, the team adds their packages to the base operating system image.

Stabilizing

Testing of the deployment packages dominates the Stabilizing Phase.

Test deployed application.

Before deploying applications to the production environment, verify the deployment process in test labs and by conducting pilot deployments. These tests and pilot deployments help identify any problems before deployment.
