Enable or disable a virtual private network
Applies To: Windows SBS 2008, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard
You may run the wizard as many times as you need to enable or disable a virtual private network (VPN) in Windows SBS 2008.
Note
You must be a network administrator to complete this procedure.
To enable a virtual private network
Open the Windows SBS Console.
On the navigation bar, click Network, and then click Connectivity.
Click Configure a virtual private network in the task pane. The Set Up Virtual Private Networking Wizard opens.
Click Allow users to connect to the server by using a VPN.
The wizard enables the Routing and Remote Access service, configures the router, and sets up a Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) VPN. When the wizard finishes enabling the VPN, click Finish.
Note
You may need to open port 1723 on your router to allow VPN connections through the router. Also, some routers require that you enable PPTP passthrough for the VPN to function correctly. For instructions about how to open the port, see the documentation from the router manufacturer.
To disable a virtual private network
Open the Windows SBS Console.
On the navigation bar, click Network, and then click Connectivity.
Click Configure a virtual private network in the task pane. The Set Up Virtual Private Networking Wizard opens.
Click Do not allow users to connect to the server by using a VPN.
The wizard disables the Routing and Remote Access service, closes port 1723 on the router, and removes the VPN configuration. When the wizard finishes disabling the VPN, click Finish.
Note
You may need to close port 1723 on your router to disable the VPN connections through the router. For instructions about how to close the port, see the documentation from the router manufacturer.
