Portqry.exe: Port Query

This command-line tool reports the status of TCP and UDP ports on a target computer. PortQry is used to troubleshoot TCP/IP connectivity issues. It provides an additional level of detail on port status not provided by other port scanning tools. You can use PortQry to query a single port, an ordered list of ports, or a sequential range of ports.

  • PortQry is a troubleshooting tool, not a security assessment tool.

Concepts

A TCP or UDP port is a mechanism that allows multiple sessions to use one IP address.

Port scanning tools search for and identify processes engaged at the port level. These processes may originate from, for example, operating system services such as DNS or WINS, or third-party applications or services. Generally, port scanning tools report only whether a port is busy or not, that is, whether there is a process on it. PortQry provides specific status information by analyzing the response from a process on a target port.
