Configure the Inbound Firewall Rules that Enable Remote Management of a Routing and Remote Access Server (RRAS)

This article describes how to enable and configure the inbound firewall rules on a Windows ServerĀ® 2008 based Routing and Remote Access Server (RRAS) to enable remote RRAS configuration.

Enable and configure inbound firewall rules

To enable remote configuration of the RRAS role in Windows Server 2008, you must first enable and configure inbound firewall rules on the RRAS server.

To enable and configure the required inbound firewall rules

  1. Start wf.msc. (Click Start, click Run, type wf.msc, and then click OK.) This starts the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security MMC snap-in.

  2. In the left panel, click Inbound Rules.

  3. For each of the following inbound rules, right-click the rule and then click Enable Rule.

    • Remote Administration (RPC)

    • File and Printer Sharing (NB-Name-In)

    • File and Printer Sharing (NB-Session-In)

    • File and Printer Sharing (SMB-In)

    • Routing and Remote Access Management (DCOM-In)

    • Routing and Remote Access Management (RPC-In)

  4. After enabling the rules, right-click a rule and then click Properties. Then, on the General tab, under Action, select the Allow the connections option and click OK. Repeat this step for all the rules you have enabled.

  5. Exit the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security MMC snap-in.
