Play shared media files when I am away from home

Updated: March 30, 2011

Applies To: Windows Home Server 2011

You can still play your media files when you are away from home. You can use a cell phone, a remote computer, or a digital media player to search for and play the shared media files that you have stored on your home server.

To play shared media files when you are away from home

  1. Open your Internet browser.

  2. Go to your Remote Web Access site. Type https://<YourDomainName>/remote in the address bar of your Internet browser and then click ENTER.

    Note

<YourDomainName> is a placeholder. It will actually be a name unique to your server, so the address you type will look more like https://fabrikam.homeserver.com/remote. If you do not know the name of your domain, ask the person who takes care of your server. They chose the domain name when they set up Remote Web Access.

  3. On the Remote Web Access Sign in page, type your user account name and password, and then click the arrow.

  4. Use whatever method you like to search for the media file you want to play.

    Note

For information about the various search methods, see Search for and play digital media.

  5. When the media file name appears, click the file name to view the media.
