Event Review: Server Core Running a Minimal Windows Server 2008 (Session ITPROADD-202)

Session Outline

In this session we will introduce Server Core by looking at the Server Core architecture and the four roles it supports. We will explore Server Core setup, including Unattended Install capability. Configuring Server Core includes options for firewalls and terminal servers, and how you can add roles and other features. Finally we will look at how managing Server Core can be done locally, or remotely with Windows Remote Shell.

In this demonstration, we will install Windows Server 2008 Server Core to a new server.

In this demonstration, we will add a new server role, add an optional feature, and then use Notepad to edit a text file.

Demo: Managing Server Core

In this demonstration, we will perform a number of management tasks locally and remotely. We'll share a file using the command-line interface on the local login to our Server Core installation. Then, we will use Microsoft Management Console (MMC) from a client computer to manage users on the server remotely. Next, we'll enable Windows Remote Management on the server and then use Windows Remote Shell on the client machine to change some settings. Finally, we will enable Terminal Server Remote Administrative Mode, using the included script, and verify that we can connect by means of Remote Desktop Connection to the server.
