How to Use Meaningful Names in Desired Configuration Management

Aplica-se a: System Center Configuration Manager 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

Configuration baselines and configuration items in Configuration Manager 2007 are, by default, displayed in the Configuration Manager console with the Name column first, so this property is most likely how you will distinguish configuration baselines and configuration items from each other. If you define and use a standard naming technique for each configuration baseline or configuration item you create, it will be easier to identify and sort them by name.

When you create a configuration baseline or configuration item in the Configuration Manager console, the date and time of creation is automatically appended to the name you supply. However, you can modify both your chosen name and the automatically appended date and time in the General tab in the properties of the configuration baseline or configuration item.

Use the following technique to help you manage configuration baselines and configuration items so that you can locate them easily when you need to modify or verify their configuration.

To use meaningful names to manage configuration baselines and configuration items

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System CenterConfiguration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management.

  2. To manage configuration baselines, click Configuration Baselines. To manage configuration items, click Configuration Items.

  3. Sort the display by name in ascending or descending order by clicking the Name column.

  4. To filter the results of all configuration baselines or configuration items by display name, enter as much of the display name as you need for identification in Look for, select Name from Search in, and then click Find Now. Click Clear when you want to return to displaying all configuration baselines or configuration items.
