How to Identify SML Compliance Evaluation Problems in Desired Configuration Management

When you import configuration data into Configuration Manager 2007, Configuration Manager is able to validate the structure and format of that configuration data when it conforms to the DCM Digest schema. However, when the configuration data contains Service Modeling Language (SML), Configuration Manager is not able to validate the structure or content of the data before sending it to clients.

SML compliance evaluation on the client might fail because of either of the following scenarios:

  • The configuration data containing SML is not in a valid format.

  • The desired configuration management client agent failed to find the objects or settings specified in the configuration data. This is referred to as a discovery failure.

Use the following procedures to identify SML compliance evaluation problems by viewing reports and using status messages.

To identify SML compliance evaluation problems by running reports

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System CenterConfiguration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Reporting / Reports.

  2. In the Reports node, click the Category column to sort the reports so that you can more easily find the reports relating to desired configuration management.

  3. Locate the reports with a category of Desired Configuration Management - Errors.

  4. Right-click one of the reports, and then click Run.

  5. In Report Information, specify any values if required, and then click Display.

  6. View any errors, and then close the report.

To identify SML compliance evaluation problems using status messages

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System CenterConfiguration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management / Desired Configuration Management / System Status / Status Message Queries.

  2. Right-click the query All Status Messages, and then click Show Messages.

  3. In the All Status Messages dialog box, you are prompted for the time period for which you want to check status messages. Enter the time period or date and time, and then click OK.

  4. All status messages are displayed in the Status Message Viewer. Click the Component column, and then locate the status messages with a component named Desired Configuration Management.

  5. In the Message ID column, look for 11864 or 11865 to identify the computers that logged a failure when processing configuration data containing SML.

  6. For more information about these status messages, right-click a status message, and then select Detail.

  7. View the information in the Status Message Details dialog box, and then click OK to close this dialog box, or click Previous or Next to view the details of other status messages.

  8. Click OK to close the Status Message Details dialog box, and close the Status Message Viewer.
