Overview of Configuration Manager Support for Windows Embedded Devices

Windows Embedded is a componentized version of Windows that lets you reduce the footprint and increase the security of Windows installations by installing only the components of the operating system that the application requires. Typically, devices using Windows Embedded might include the following:

  • Point of sale (POS) devices

  • Automated teller machines (ATM)

  • Industrial controllers

  • Gateways

  • Internet Protocol (IP) telephones

  • Server appliances

  • Windows-based thin clients

  • Advanced consumer electronic products

  • Specialized handheld devices

When the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 client is installed on a Windows Embedded device, the following Configuration Manager 2007 features are supported:

  • Desired Configuration Management

  • Hardware Inventory

  • Software Inventory (with limitations)

  • Software Metering

  • Software Distribution (with limitations)

  • Software Updates Management (with limitations)

  • Remote Tools (with limitations)

  • Remote Desktop

  • Remote Assistance (with limitations)

  • Wake-on-LAN

  • Configuration Manager 2007 reporting for the preceding features
