How to Set the Static MAC Address Range for Virtual Network Devices

Applies To: Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 SP1

Use the Global Static MAC Address Range settings in Administration view to specify the range of static MAC addresses for Virtual Machine Manager to use during auto generation of static MAC addresses for new virtual network devices. VMM provides a reserved range of MAC addresses for the virtual machines that it manages. Modify these settings if you want to use a different range. Each address is used only once.

To set the static MAC address range for virtual machines

  1. In Administration view, in the navigation pane, click Networking, and then click Global Static MAC Address Range in the results pane.

  2. In the Actions pane, under Settings, click Modify.

  3. To change the global static MAC address range, enter new values in the Start range at and End range at fields. The default values are a reserved range that VMM provides for the virtual machines that it manages (1DD8B71C00 – 1DD8F41FFF). If you prefer to use a different range, your entries must meet these requirements:

    • Enter valid hexadecimal values between 00 and FF.

    • The first three octets must be the same for the Start and End addresses.

    • To avoid conflicts with addresses reserved by VMware, Microsoft, and XenSource, do not use the following prefixes.
