How to Repair a Virtual Machine
Applies To: Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 SP1
Use the following procedure to return a virtual machine that has failed to a healthy state in Virtual Machine Manager (VMM).
The following options are available:
Retry the action that caused the virtual machine to fail.
Restore the virtual machine to its previous state, before the action that caused the virtual machine to fail.
If you mitigated the issue that caused the virtual machine to fail outside Virtual Machine Manager (for example, you copied a missing .vhd file to the appropriate folder), refresh the virtual machine to update its metadata in the Virtual Machine Manager database.
Warning
Repairing a missing differencing disk that has been deleted outside Virtual Machine Manager will permanently delete the parent virtual hard disk. If you want to save the parent virtual hard disk, you must make a copy of the disk before you repair the virtual machine.
To repair a virtual machine that is in a Failed state
In Virtual Machines view, in the navigation pane, navigate to the host on which the virtual machine is deployed.
To view only virtual machines with Failed status, in Filters, expand Status, and then click Failed.
In the results pane, select the virtual machine you want to repair.
To get information about the failure:
In the details pane, click Latest Job to view a summary of the most recent job run on the virtual machine.
To get additional information about the failure, display Jobs view, and review the details of recent jobs run on the virtual machine. For more information, see Monitoring Jobs in VMM.
In the Actions pane, under Virtual Machine, click Repair.
In the Repair dialog box, select the appropriate option:
Click Retry to restart the job that caused the virtual machine to fail.
Click Undo to return the virtual machine to its previous state before the job that caused it to fail.
Click Ignore to refresh the metadata for the virtual machine and update its status if you fixed the issue that caused the virtual machine to fail outside Virtual Machine Manager. For example, you might have copied a missing virtual hard disk file to the appropriate folder.
