How to Set Placement Options for a Host

When you deploy or migrate a virtual machine to a host, you can select a default virtual machine path, which specifies the location of a folder on the host where the virtual machine files will be stored. Default virtual machines paths are also used by VMM in automatic placement. For a clustered host, either Windows Server-based or VMware-based, the default virtual machine path is a shared volume on the cluster that VMM automatically creates when you add the cluster as a host. When you add a cluster as a host, you cannot specify additional default paths in the Add Host Wizard. Also, after a host cluster is added, you cannot specify additional virtual machine default paths on the Placement tab of the host properties.
When you add a stand-alone Windows Server-based host, you can add one or more default virtual machine paths on the host in the Add Hosts Wizard. After you add a host, you can add or remove default virtual machines paths on the host.
Important
Adding a default path on a host in the Add Host Wizard does not automatically create the folder on the host. You must manually create the folder at the specified path before you can use the path in VMM to store virtual machine files on the host.
You can also remove a stand-alone Windows-based host or specific host volumes from placement.
To add or remove default virtual machine paths for a host
In Hosts view, navigate to the host group that contains the host, and then, in the results pane, double-click the host.
Click the Placement tab.
To add a default virtual machine path to the host, click Add, and in the Select Destination Folder dialog box, navigate to the folder on the host where you want to store virtual machines, and then click OK.
The virtual machine path is added to the list of default virtual machine paths and will be available for placement.
To remove a default virtual machine path from the host, in the list of default paths, click a path, and then click Remove.
To remove a host from placement
In Hosts view, navigate to the host group that contains the host, and then, in the results pane, double-click the host.
Click the Status tab.
Clear the This host is available for placement check box, and then click OK.
To remove a host volume from placement
In Hosts view, navigate to the host group that contains the host, and then, in the results pane, double-click the host.
Click the Hardware tab.
In the Storage area, click a volume, and then, in the results pane, clear the Available for placement check box.
The volume will not be available for placement.
