In any Analysis Session, Message Analyzer enables you to use common data viewers to display message summary details in a tree grid configuration, top-level message summaries with graphic data visualizers that include charts and timelines, and a pattern matching analysis summary that results from applying Pattern expressions that find one or more matches in a set of trace results. The UI elements that implement these viewer formats are described in this section, along with related functional descriptions, how to launch these data viewers, and how to use them to solve diagnostic problems. A brief description of several of the most commonly used data viewers is included in Common Data Viewers, later in this topic. More detailed descriptions are included in other topics of this section.
Data Viewer Library
Message Analyzer has many data viewers that you can select from a common Library that is accessible in several UI locations. For example, you can choose data viewers during session configuration in the New Session dialog prior to starting a session, or afterwards in an Analysis Session where you have displayed session results. The data viewer Library contains various types of viewers that exist in several categories. The predefined data viewers that exist in the following categories are described in the subtopics of this section, which includes Chart viewers:
Note that you can also create your own data viewer Charts that contain various data visualizers, and you can create your own data viewer library categories in which to place them or you can add them to an existing category.
Note You can specify any data viewer as the default for all sessions by choosing one in the Session Viewer pane on the General tab of the global Options dialog, which is accessible from the Message Analyzer Tools menu.
Common Data Viewers
The following is a sampling of some common Message Analyzer data viewers, among many described in this section. They present message data in various formats for the results of any Data Retrieval Session or Live Trace Session:
Analysis Grid Viewer — a Common category data viewer. It is the default tree grid display that contains a default column layout with expandable parent and child message nodes that expose top-level transactions/operations and message origins, respectively, in a tree-view structure. Also, the message Details, Message Data, and Field Data Tool Windows display by default when you specify the Analysis Grid as a data viewer. Message selection in the Analysis Grid drives interaction with these Tool Windows.
Grouping Viewer — a Common category data viewer. It enables you to display hierarchical groups that summarize message data in a trace, based on predefined layout configurations or custom group layouts that you create and save in your viewer asset library. Selection of groups in this viewer causes interaction with other viewers of the same session to occur, which includes message selection and filtering, for drilling down further in the analysis process. You can also alter the predefined configurations of the Grouping Viewer by changing View Layouts, adding new fields from the Field Chooser Tool Window, or by reorganizing (dragging and dropping) the existing Group node positions.
Pattern Match Viewer — a Common category data viewer. It is a special viewer that enables you to detect message patterns or sequences within a message collection, based on predefined or custom-designed OPN Pattern expressions. Also provides a summary analysis of Matches, Matched Instances details, and the correlated Messages.
Protocol Dashboard — a Dashboards category data viewer. It is a Chart viewer that contains a collection of graphic visualizer components for displaying message data in top-level summaries, which include the following:
A Top Level Protocol Summary table grid that summarizes message count per module.
Two Top Level Protocol Summary chart visualizer components that expose bandwidth consumption as relative message volume bar and percentage indicators for all messages captured in a trace.
A Top Level Protocols Over Time chart visualizer component that provides a message count versus timeline display in the x-y coordinate domain.
SMB Reads and Writes — a File Sharing category data viewer. It is a Chart viewer that summarizes SMB file sharing information, which includes files accessed, bytes-per-second data in an x-y coordinate display, and bytes sent statistics, for SMB read/write requests captured across the timeline of a trace. Note that this Chart will display data only if your trace contains SMB message traffic.
Preview Data Viewers
The following data viewers are provided as preview features. To use them, you must select them from the Features tab of the global Options dialog that is accessible from the Message Analyzer File menu. You must then restart Message Analyzer:
— a Common category data viewer. It is a graphic visualizer component that provides a view of message dispersion across a trace timeline that is presented as color-coded protocol-module identifiers, with source/destination address message pairs in the y-axis orientation and timestamps in the x-axis orientation.
— a Common category data viewer. It is a grid-style visualizer that graphically illustrates computer nodes and endpoints that exchanged messages within the time boundaries of a trace. It also correlates the IP conversations that took place for the protocols or modules that participated in message exchanges and provides message summary details in hover over pop-ups.
Message Summary Tiles Viewer
— a Common category data viewer. It summarizes important data for any set of trace results by providing a high-level overview of major trace statistics and other significant values that you can see at-a-glance to obtain a quick top-level analysis of results.
