Set the autoinstall option for an application

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To set the autoinstall option for an application

  1. Open Group Policy Software Installation.

  2. In the console tree, click Software installation.

Where?

  • Group Policy object\Computer Configuration (or User Configuration)\Software Settings\Software installation
  1. In the details pane, right-click the application that you want to be installed automatically when the user tries to open a file with the associated extension.

  2. Click Properties, and then click the Deployment tab.

  3. Under Deployment options, select the Auto-install this application by file extension activation check box, and then click OK. This option is recommended, and it is selected by default.

Notes

  • To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as a member of the Domain Administrators security group, the Enterprise Administrators security group, or the Group Policy Creator Owners security group.

  • When you upgrade an application, turn off the autoinstall option for the older version.
