Cannot install the Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 on a server running a pre-released version of Windows Home Server 2011, Windows SBS 2011 Essentials, or Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials

The Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) includes RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory which provides customers with the ability to take advantage of enhanced server and desktop virtualization. Installation of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is not supported on a server that is running a pre-released version of Windows Home Server 2011, Windows SBS 2011 Essentials, or Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials. To resolve this issue, you must upgrade your server to run the released version of the product and try installing the service pack again. Verify if your server is running pre-released version of Windows Home Server 2011, Windows SBS 2011 Essentials, or Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials using the following procedure.

To verify if server is running a pre-released version of the product

  1. Open the server Dashboard.

  2. Expand drop-down menu of the Help button on the upper right side of the Dashboard.

  3. Click About <productname>, where product name is the name of the product that is running on the server

  4. In the About <productname>, click the Microsoft Software License Terms link.

  5. In the Microsoft License Terms page, verify if license terms is for the pre-released version of the software. If yes, you will need to buy the RTM version of the product when license expires for the pre-released version. Review the term of the license agreement to determine the expiration date of the pre-released software version.
