Configuring Windows Deployment Services

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

After you install Windows Deployment Services, you will need to configure the server. The server configuration depends on which role services that you install.

In this section:

  • Transport Server. You can install only the Transport Server role service. This role service provides a subset of the functionality of Windows Deployment Services and you can install it in environments that do not have Active Directory Domain Services, DHCP, or DNS. You can use Transport Server to network boot computers into Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE), transmit data (including operating system images) using multicasting, or both.

  • Deployment Server. You can install both the Deployment Server and Transport Server role services, which provides the full functionality of Windows Deployment Services. (You cannot install only Deployment Server without Transport Server.)
