舊版的 Microsoft Exchange Server 在網域磁碟分割中套用權限時，並不是很依賴內容設定。雖然這在一般的部署中並不是什麼問題，但是在委派所有工作的分散式環境中卻會造成問題。這些環境中的系統管理員必須為郵件收件者指派許多屬性的權限，以便以最小權限的存取模型委派適當的工作。根據 Active Directory 目錄服務伺服器的版本而定，這有可能造成嚴重的存取控制清單 (ACL) 膨脹，增加 Ntds.dit 檔案的大小。
因此 Exchange Server 2007 針對大部分的郵件收件者屬性使用內容設定，以加強管理委派。
什麼是內容設定？
內容設定是指一組 Active Directory 屬性。您可設定一個存取控制項目 (ACE) 來控制這一組 Active Directory 屬性的存取，而不用在每個內容上都設定一個 ACE。另外，一個屬性只能是單一內容設定的成員。
在 Exchange Server 2003 中，Exchange 架構延伸模組處理程序新增許多 Exchange 相關的郵件收件者屬性至內建的 Active Directory 內容設定：Personal Information 和 Public Information。在網域準備階段期間，網域磁碟分割上的這些內容設定會獲指派 Exchange 企業伺服器網域本機安全性群組的存取權，讓收件者更新服務 (RUS) 能夠更新物件。下表列出 Personal Information 和 Public Information 內容設定裡的屬性。

但是，在委派管理郵件收件者的權限時，許多 Active Directory 系統管理員並不會使用這些內容設定來指派權限給 Exchange 系統管理員，因為這些內容設定還提供其他許多非 Exchange 相關屬性的存取。
Exchange 2007 中的內容設定
Exchange 2007 透過建立 Exchange Server 專用的兩個新內容設定來利用內容設定的功能，而不是依賴現有的 Active Directory 內容設定。Exchange 2007 有許多改進項目，包括：
