Getting started with Enterprise Manager

Applies To: Forefront Client Security

Supported configurations

The Client Security Enterprise Manager tool has two primary components:

  • The Client Security deployments. These are managed by the Enterprise Manager installation and are called down-level Client Security deployments.

  • The Enterprise Manager instance.

Down-level Client Security deployments

You can install the down-level Client Security deployments in any of the supported Client Security topologies. For more information about the supported Client Security topologies, see Choosing your topology in the Planning and Architecture Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91871).

A single Enterprise Manager instance can manage up to 10 down-level Client Security deployments. Each down-level Client Security deployment can manage up to 10,000 computers, giving each Enterprise Manager instance the ability to support up to 100,000 managed computers.

The Client Security installations on the down-level Client Security servers must meet the following requirements:

  • The Client Security installations on the target down-level servers must be the same language installation as the Client Security installation on the Enterprise Manager server.

  • The computer names of the Client Security collection database server and reporting database server must be unique in all down-level Client Security deployments.

  • Each down-level Client Security deployment must use a unique management group name.

Note

All down-level Client Security deployments must have the retail version of Client Security installed prior to the installation of Enterprise Manager.

Enterprise Manager instance

The Enterprise Manager instance consists of a one-server or two-server Client Security deployment. Installation of the Enterprise Manager components on any topology other than a one-server or two-server topology is not supported.

Note

The Enterprise Manager instance must have the retail version of Client Security installed prior to the installation of Enterprise Manager.

Enterprise Manager system requirements

The target Enterprise Manager down-level Client Security deployments and the Client Security deployment for the Enterprise Manager instance must be fully updated with all Client Security updates.

System requirements for the Enterprise Manager down-level deployments are the same as for a standard Client Security deployment. For more information on Client Security system requirements, see "System requirements for Client Security" in the Client Security Planning and Architecture Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=86940).

The system requirements for the Enterprise Manager instance remain the same as for a combined one-server production topology, with the exception of disk space. For more information about the system requirements for a combined one-server production topology, see System requirement for Client Security. Because the Enterprise Manager instance will be collecting information from up to ten Enterprise Manager down-level deployments, each of which may be as large as 10,000 managed computers, you may need substantially more than the 100 GB recommended.
