Unable to connect to DPM File Agent

Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005

Summary

DPM periodically contacts the DPM agents to check connectivity status. This alert is generated when the DPM server has not been able to contact the specified file server since the specified time. If the connection is not established, subsequent data protection jobs will fail.

Causes

The error conditions and recommended action associated with each connection failure are provided with the alert. Some common causes include:

  • File server is not available

The file server has been shut down or has been disconnected from the network and cannot be contacted.

  • The DPM File Agent is not compatible with DPM software

A more recent version of Data Protection Manager has been installed on the DPM server, but the DPM File Agent on the file server has not been not updated. For more information, see How to update a file agent.

  • File server is behind a firewall

Firewall settings on the DPM server or the file server are preventing the DPM server from communicating with the file server.

Resolutions

Resolutions for some common issues related to communication between the DPM server and a protected file server are provided in this topic. However, this Help topic does not provide a comprehensive list of issues and it does not fully cover all possible resolutions. For more information about resolving issues with agents, see the “Troubleshooting” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide.

To resolve agent communication errors

  • Make sure that you can establish a remote session with the DPM server from the file server.

  • Make sure that the file server is on the network and working properly.

If the file server has been removed from the network permanently, stop protecting its data sources and uninstall the file agent from the file server. For more information, see How to remove members and How to uninstall a file agent.

  • Ensure that the DPM File Agent service is running on both the DPM server and the file server.

If the DPM File Agent service is not running, restart the service. If the service fails to start, reinstall the DPM File Agent on the file server. For information about how to reinstall an agent, see How to uninstall a file agent and How to install a file agent.

To update the DPM File Agent

  1. In DPM Administrator Console, click Management in the navigation bar, and then select the Agents tab.

  2. In the Display pane, select the file server that you need to update.

  3. In the Actions pane, click Update, and then follow the instructions provided for updating agents. For more information, see How to update a file agent.

To resolve firewall issues

To enable a DPM server to protect file servers, firewalls must allow communication between DPM and the file server. If Windows Firewall is enabled when you install DPM, DPM setup configures the firewall on the DPM server. If you are using firewall software other than Windows Firewall or if you enable Windows Firewall after you install DPM, you must manually configure the firewall. If a firewall is enabled on the file server, you must configure the firewall on the file server. For more information, see the “Managing Servers” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide.
