Shadow Copy Report

Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005

The Shadow Copy Report provides statistics about shadow copy success and failure rates, their total number, and protection coverage information. The data is collected per file server and aggregated for all file servers, or per protection group and aggregated for all protection groups.

Each page of the report shows the shadow copy details for one file server or one protection group, as specified in the report parameters at a volume level.

Frequently asked questions

While you are reviewing the data in the Shadow Copy Report, you may have questions about how to use the data or interpret the report.

Why is the trend of shadow copy job failures rising?

This may be caused by Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) issues, disk space being fully allocated, or synchronization job failures. You can review the details for a shadow copy job failure in the Monitoring task area. For more information, see How to display job details.

What does protection objective mean?

The protection objective is a sample indicator of quality, defined within the DPM reporting context. It indicates the number of shadow copies that were created within two hours of the shadow copy time specified in the protection schedule.

Why is the protection objective not being met?

A shadow copy is created only if the corresponding synchronization job, since the last shadow copy job, was run successfully. If the corresponding synchronization job failed, the scheduled shadow copy will not be created.

Does it matter if the shadow copy time in the report does not match the shadow copy time in the protection schedule?

Yes, shadow copy times in the Shadow Copy Report and shadow copy settings in the protection schedule should match. If the most recent shadow copy date/time does not match the schedule, your data may not be fully protected. You can review the details for a shadow copy job in the Monitoring task area. For more information, see How to display job details.
