How to roll back a file agent

Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005

If you experience problems after updating a file agent, you can roll back to a version that was working before you installed the update. Installing a previous version of the file agent involves two steps:

  1. Uninstall the updated file agent locally from the file server.

  2. Reinstall the previous file agent on the file server by using the DPM Administrator Console.

To uninstall the updated version of the file agent

  1. In Control Panel on the protected file server, click Add or Remove Programs.

  2. In Change or Remove Programs, click Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 File Agent, and then click Remove.

  3. Wait for confirmation that the file agent was successfully uninstalled.

To reinstall the previous version of the file agent

  1. In DPM Administrator Console, click Management on the navigation bar, and then click the Agents tab.

  2. In the Actions pane, click Refresh information to update agent status.

  3. In the Display pane, select the server that you want to roll back and then, in the Details pane, click Remove the record of this server.

This should remove the file server entry from the Display pane.

  4. On the Actions pane, click Install.

  5. On the Select servers page, click Advanced.

The Advanced option is enabled only when there is more than one version of the file agent available for installation on the selected file servers. If enabled, you can use this option to roll back to a previous compatible version.

  6. In the Advanced dialog box, select the previous version that you want to install.

    Note

If the previous version that you want to install is not displayed, it means that this previous version is not compatible with the currently installed DPM software. To roll back to a previous version that is not displayed, you will first need to roll back the DPM software.

  7. On the Enter Credentials page, type the user name and password for a domain account that is a member of the local administrators group on each of the selected servers.

  8. On the Choose Restart Method page, select the method you will use to restart the file servers after the file agent is installed.

    Important

The file servers must be restarted before you can start protecting data. This restart is necessary to ensure that the file agent gets installed correctly. After restart, it may take a few more minutes before DPM can contact the file server because of the time required to start services.

  9. On the Summary page, click Install Agents to proceed with the installation. DPM installs the previous version of the file agent that you selected.

A status box is displayed to indicate whether the installation is successful. You cannot close this box until after installation has either succeeded or failed. For information about resolving agent installation failures, see the “Troubleshooting” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide.
