Network throttling not working

Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005

Summary

This alert is generated when network bandwidth usage throttling has been enabled in DPM for the specified volume or share on the specified file server, but throttling is not working. Network bandwidth usage throttling limits the amount of network bandwidth that DPM can use to create and synchronize replicas. Throttling helps to ensure that network bandwidth is available to applications other than DPM. To implement this option, you must have the Quality of Service (QoS) Packet Scheduler installed and enabled on the file server.

Causes

The Quality of Service (QoS) Packet Scheduler is either not enabled or not installed on the file server.

Resolutions

To resolve the alert you can enable or install the QoS Packet Scheduler or, if you determine that network bandwidth usage throttling is not critical for the protection group, you can disable this option.

To enable or install the QoS Packet Scheduler on the file server

  1. In Control Panel, point to Network Connections or Network Dial-up Connections, right-click the appropriate connection, and then click Properties.

  2. Determine whether the QoS Packet Scheduler needs to be enabled or installed. If QoS has been installed, the General tab includes a QoS Packet Scheduler check box. If QoS has been enabled, the check box is selected.

  3. Enable or install QoS, as needed:

    • To enable QoS, on the General tab, select the QoS Packet Scheduler check box, and click OK.

    • To install and enable QoS, on the General tab, click Install, click Service, click Add, click QoS Packet Scheduler, and then click OK.

To turn off network bandwidth usage throttling for the protection group

  1. In DPM Administrator Console, click Protection on the navigation bar and then select the affected protection group.

  2. In the Actions pane, click Modify protection options.

  3. On the Performance tab, clear the Enable network bandwidth usage throttling check box.

The “Network throttling not working” alert will be resolved after the next synchronization job is completed.
