How to Modify the Properties of a VMware VirtualCenter Server

To change the port used for connections to a VMware VirtualCenter server, update the administrative account used for the connections, or change the security mode for managing VMware ESX Server hosts, you can use the following procedure to modify the properties of the VirtualCenter server.

When you manage a VMware environment in secure mode, VMM authenticates each ESX Server host on all protocols used for communication. In secure mode, for hosts running ESX Server 3i, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) over HTTPS (for ESX Server 3i) requires certificate authentication. For hosts running either ESX Server 3.5 or ESX Server 3.0.2, SFTP over Secure Shell (SSH) requires host public key authentication. Clear this option if you want to trust communications and require credentials only for the hosts.

To modify the properties of a VMware VirtualCenter server

  1. In Administration view of the VMM Administrator Console, click Virtualization Managers.

  2. In the results pane, select the VirtualCenter server that you want to modify.

  3. In the Actions pane, click Properties.

  4. To change the port, update the TCP/IP port field.

  5. To update the credentials used to connect to the VirtualCenter server, specify a new account and password under Administrative account.

  6. To change the security mode for communication with the ESX Server hosts that are managed by the VirtualCenter server, clear or select the Communicate with VMware ESX Server hosts in secure mode check box.
