How to Create an Alert View

The following procedure shows how to create an alert view in the Operations Manager 2007 Authoring console. You can then configure the view by using both the Operations console and the Authoring console.

Before you perform this procedure, you must first complete the prerequisite procedure How to Create a Group in which you create the target group.

The view created in this procedure has the following characteristics:

  • Includes alerts from rules and monitors targeted at any object on a computer in My Computer Group.

  • Includes only alerts with Critical severity that are not closed.

  • Displays the following columns:

    • Alert Severity Icon

    • Path

    • Source

    • Name

    • Resolution State

    • Time and date created

    • Age of the alert

    • Repeat count

  • Grouped by the following columns:

    • Severity
  • Sorted by the following columns:

    • Path

    • Name

To create alert view

  1. In the Authoring console, select Presentation, and then select Views.

  2. Expand Microsoft.SystemCenter.Monitoring.ViewFolder.Root.

  3. Right-click MyMP.Folder.Top, select New, and then select Alert View.

  4. On the General tab, do the following:

    1. In the Element ID box, select MyMP.View.Alert.MyComputerGroup.

    2. In the Display Name box, type My Computer Group Critical Alerts. Click OK.

    3. In the Target box, select Browse all classes.

    4. In the Management Pack Class Chooser box, select Microsoft.Windows.Computer.

    5. In the Category box, select Alert.

  5. Click Finish.

  6. Right-click MyMP.View.Alert.MyComputerGroup and select Properties.

  7. On the Folder tab, do the following:

    1. Click to clear Microsoft.SystemCenter.Monitoring.ViewFolder.Root.

    2. Select MyMP.Folder.Top.

  8. Click OK.

  9. Select File, and then click Save.

To install the management pack

  1. In the Authoring console, select the Tools menu, and then select Export MP to Management Group.

  2. Select the management group.

  3. Click Connect.

To modify the view in the Operations console

  1. In the Operations console, select Monitoring.

  2. Expand the My Management Pack folder.

  3. Right-click My Computer Group Critical Alerts, and then select Properties.

  4. On the Criteria tab, do the following:

    1. Click the button to the right side of the Show data contained in a specific group box.

    2. Select My Computer Group, and then click OK.

    3. Select of a specific severity.

    4. In the Criteria description box, click specific.

    5. Select Warning and Critical, and then click OK.

    6. Select with a specific resolution state.

    7. In the Criteria description box, click specific.

    8. Select Select only specific Resolution State.

    9. Select Not Equals.

    10. Type 255.

    11. Click OK.

  5. On the Display tab, do the following:

    1. Click to clear Severity.

    2. Select Path.

    3. Click to clear Maintenance Mode.

    4. Select Repeat Count.

    5. In the Group items by box select Severity.

    6. In the Sort columns by box select Path.

  6. Click OK.

To modify the view in the Authoring console

  1. In the Authoring console, select the Tools menu, and then select Import MP from Management Group.

  2. Select the management group.

  3. In the Import from Management Group dialog box, select MyMP and then click Import.

  4. Select Presentation, and then select Views.

  5. Expand the Microsoft.SystemCenter.Monitoring.ViewFolder.Root folder.

  6. Expand the MyMP.Folder.Top folder.

  7. Right-click MyMP.View.State.MyComputerGroup, and then select Properties.

  8. On the Configuration tab, click Edit to start the external editor.

  9. Change the Sorted attribute to true for the following columns:

    • Path

    • Name

  10. Change the SortIndex attribute to the following values:

    • Path: 0

    • Name: 1

  11. Scroll to the bottom and replace the GUID in the Target element with $MPElement[Name='MyMP.MyComputerGroup']$

  12. Close the external editor, and save the configuration in the Authoring console.

  13. Click OK.

  14. Select File, and then click Save.
