Reference architectures for Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server
There are two main reference architectures used for Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE) deployments: Enterprise Reference Architecture and Standard Reference Architecture.
Enterprise Reference Architecture
Enterprise Reference Architecture (ERA) is a scalable unit intended to be deployed within a larger organization. It is comprised of an Edge Transport server, Hub Transport server, multiple Mailbox servers, a Global Catalog (Active Directory) server, and a Client Access Server (CAS), as shown in the following illustration.
Standard Reference Architecture
The Standard Reference Architecture (SRA) is intended to be a scalable unit targeted at small to medium sized organizations. As shown in the following illustration, it is comprised of a dedicated Edge Transport server, one or more multi-role servers that encompass the Hub Transport server, Mailbox server, and CAS roles, and a dedicated Active Directory server.
