DumpFile

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

DumpFile

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl

Data type Range Default value

REG_EXPAND_SZ

Path

%SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP

Description

Specifies the location of the recovery log file. If the system stops abnormally, and the value of the CrashDumpEnabled entry is either 1 or 2, then Windows Server 2003 copies the contents of system memory to the recovery log file.

If you change the value of this entry, then Windows Server 2003 does not move any existing recovery log files. Instead, the next time the system stops abnormally, it creates a recovery log file in the new location.

This entry stores the value of the Dump File text box in Write debugging information in System in Control Panel.

Change Method

To change the value of this entry, use System in Control Panel. Click the Advanced tab, then click Startup and Recovery. Under Write debugging information, in the Dump File text box, enter the location of the log file.

Activation Method

You must restart Windows to make changes to this entry effective.

Note

  • To change the value of this entry, you must be an administrator of the computer.

Tip

  • For best performance, the recovery log file should be on the system drive. This prevents the crashdump engine from copying the file from the system drive, where it is created, to another drive.
