Edge Servers provide external users with access to Microsoft® Office Communications Server functionality. The planning process for enabling access for external users includes the following:

Step 1. Evaluate Your Organization's Requirements for External User Access. Decide whether the features and functionality of Edge Servers are appropriate for your organization.

Step 2. Determine the Components Required for External User Access. Identify the components necessary for external user access.

Step 3. Identify the Technical Requirements for Deploying External User Access. Identify prerequisites and other requirements that must be met to deploy Edge Servers, including certificates and public key infrastructure, firewalls, subnets, and a reverse HTTP proxy.

Step 4. Plan Your Deployment of External User Access. Define the tasks required to deploy all components of external user access, and determine how they will be implemented.
