Description

Prevents the system from conducting a comprehensive search of the target drive to resolve a shortcut.

By default, when the system cannot find the target file for a shortcut (.lnk), it searches all paths associated with the shortcut. If the target file is located on an NTFS file system partition, the system then uses the target's file ID to find a path. If the resulting path is not correct, it comprehensively searches the target drive to try to find the file.

If the value of this entry is 1, the system does not conduct the final, comprehensive search. It just displays a message explaining that the file has not been found.

This entry stores the setting of the Do not use the search-based method when resolving shell shortcuts Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes this entry from the registry, and the system behaves as though the value is 0.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Do not use the search-based method when resolving shell shortcuts Group Policy (User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu & Taskbar).

Note

This entry applies only to target files on NTFS partitions. File allocation table (FAT) partitions do not have this ID tracking and search capability.
