Publish files
The first step in publishing files is to set the publishing destination. There are several ways to manage your publishing destination.
For more information, see Publishing sites.
Important
If you stop the publishing process in progress, files that have already been published will remain on the publishing destination.
By default, all files are marked for publishing. By using Publishing view in Microsoft Expression Web, you can choose which files will be published and which will be excluded from publishing.
To add a publishing destination
In Publishing view, click Add a publishing destination.
In the Connection Settings dialog box, type the Name of the site.
Select a Connection Type:
FTP
SFTP
FTPS
FrontPage Server Extensions
WebDAV
File System
In the Location box, type the Internet address, including the protocol, of the publishing destination that you want to publish folders and files to (for example, ftp://www.example.com).
Type the Directory for the web root (for example, wwwroot or public_html).
Note
If you maintain multiple sites using the same web hosting provider and those sites use different credentials, append @[username] to the directory, where [username] is same as the User name you use in the Credentials section (for example, public_html@[username])
For all connection types except File System, type the User name and Password of an account that has permission to publish to the location.
For FTP, SFTP, and FTPS connections, set the number of simultaneous connections. This setting can significantly reduce publishing time.
Note
Check with your web hosting provider before configuring this setting. Many providers limit the number of simultaneous connections. If you exceed that number, publishing speed may be reduced.
For FTP, SFTP, and FTPS connections, choose whether to Use Passive FTP. Some network configurations will work only with passive FTP mode turned on; others will work only with passive FTP mode turned off. Most network configurations will support both modes. The passive FTP mode is considered more secure.
To mark files that you do not want to publish
Do one of the following:
In the Folder List panel, right-click the file that you do not want to publish, and then click Exclude from Publishing.
In the left-hand pane of Publishing view, right-click the file that you do not want to publish, and then click Exclude from Publishing.
To publish files and folders
In Publishing view, between the left and right panes, click the Publish button.
Tip
To quickly move files between the local site and the publishing destination, click a file in the source site and drag it to the destination site.
