Publishing sites

Microsoft Expression Web supports several different publishing scenarios. You can work on your own computer and then publish your changes to a remote production web server; you can work on a remote staging web server and publish your changes to a remote production server; or you can work directly on a remote production web server. In each scenario, you can choose what protocol you want to use to move files between computers.

To work on a local computer and publish to a remote production server

  1. On the Site menu, click Open Site.

  2. In the Open Site dialog box, browse to and click the folder that contains the site, and then click Open.

  3. Add a publishing destination for this site if one does not already exist.

To work on a remote staging server and publish to a remote production server

  1. On the Site menu, click Open Site.

  2. In the Open Site dialog box, browse to and click the folder that contains the site, and then click Open.

  3. Add a publishing destination for this site if one does not already exist.

To work directly on a remote production server using WebDAV or FrontPage Server Extensions

  1. On the Site menu, click Open Site.

  2. In the Open Site dialog box, select the site you want, and then click Open.

  3. Click the Publishing tab, and then click the Connect to the current publishing destination link.

  4. Click the Open your destination site in Expression Web link.

    A new instance of Expression Web opens, connected directly to the remote site.

To work directly on a remote production server using FTP

Important

Do not use this method if your site uses FrontPage Server Extensions.

  1. On the Site menu, click Open Site.

  2. In the Open Site dialog box, enter the FTP address of the site you want, and then click Open.

  3. In the Remote Site Editing Options dialog box, select Edit live site now, and then click OK.
