Step 3. Identify the Technical Requirements for Deploying Communicator Mobile for Java (2007 R2 Beta)

[This is preliminary documentation and is subject to change. Blank topics are included as placeholders.]

This section describes the installation requirements for the Communicator Mobile for Java client. It assumes that the deployment requirements of Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and the various server roles have been met.

Communicator Web Access Server Deployment

Communicator Web Access Server is a critical server deployment requirement for Communicator Mobile for Java. Communicator Mobile for Java uses Communicator Web Access Server to install the client software, connect client devices to the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 environment, and act as a gateway to the various Office Communications Server functions.

To enable Communicator Mobile for Java features, a Communicator Web Access Server must be included as part of the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 deployment planning.

Certificate Requirements for Communicator Web Access Server

In order to perform authentication, Communicator Mobile for Java requires that the root certificate that is part of the Communicator Web Access Server certificate is installed on the mobile device. Most Feature phones have a list of trusted Certificate Authorities on the device.

The Communications Web Access server certificate must be included in the list of trusted root certificates on the Feature phone.

Publish Client Download URL

During installation of the Communicator Web Access server, Communicator Mobile for Java server features are installed and configured. A virtual directory is created on the Communicator Web Access Server and provides the URL location where client devices will connect to install the Communicator Mobile for Java software. Both internal and external users connect to Communicator Web Access by entering a URI in their Web browser, for example https://extusers.contoso.com /mobile. The Communicator Web Access Server administrator adds the client download URL to the Communicator Web Access Server logon screen.

Voice Mail Configuration

During installation of the Communicator Web Access server, another administrative task that must be completed is configuration of the Voice Mail Indication feature. Communicator Mobile for Java includes a Voice Mail Indicator feature that provides the number of unread voice mails for the user. It also provides the ability for users to call and listen to their voice mail messages. This last feature, however, is only supported on Motorola Razr V3xx phones.

For additional information on configuring the Voice Mail Indication feature for Communicator Mobile for Java, please see the topic: Configuring Communicator Web Access Server [Server Component for Communicator Mobile for Java]
