Multiple User Profiles on a Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld Device

You can provision devices with different sets of configuration settings for different user profiles or roles. You can define available settings and apps, including non-Microsoft apps in Prov.xml. For more information, see Create a Prov.xml.

Button Remapping

Factory Provisioning

Reset Phone Wipes Provisioning

Retain Provisioning and Reset Phone

Provisioning on startup

Device startup is optimized for mass deployments, which employ a lockdown configuration. For more information, see Provision the device on startup.

Provision settings

Enable or disable settings, including assigned access, by using a Prov.xml file from an SD card, NFC tag or device, or other source as enabled by the manufacturer. For more information, see Configuration options in Provision the device on startup and Locking down a device.

MDM Provisioning

Start Screen Layout Control

Pin apps in the Allow list to the Start screen, and then specify tile size and location. For more information, see EnterpriseAssignedAccess configuration service provider.

Configure a device after deployment

After you deploy your devices, configure lockdown settings. For more information, see Locking down a device.

Re-image a device using flash

Test a full flash update (FFU) image containing fixes on a device without going through Microsoft Update. For more information, see Use manual flash to test an updated image.

Auto Run Application

Configure one application per profile to run automatically, suppressing the Start screen when starting the device. For more information, see Provision the device on startup and Locking down a device.

Action Center Integration

Filter notifications and quick settings per application and settings Allow lists. For more information, see Provision the device on startup and Locking down a device.

Application Allow List

Filter the All programs list to show only enterprise-defined applications for each assigned access profile. You do this through the Apps section of the provisioning file. For more information, see Provision the device on startup and Locking down a device.

Settings Allow List

Filter settings to show only Settings apps on the Allow list. The ability to filter settings also applies to Action center access to Settings by using Quick Settings. You filter settings through the provisioning file. For more information, see Provision the device on startup and Locking down a device.

Kiosk Mode

Configure the device with a single app in the Allow list that is set to run automatically, disabling access to the Start screen. For more information, see Configure a device to run in kiosk mode.

Disable Notification Center

Disable access to the Action center, or notification center. For more information, see EnterpriseAssignedAccess configuration service provider.

Disable Toasts

Disable all toast notifications that display at the top of the screen. You do this through the provisioning file. For more information, see Provision the device on startup and Locking down a device.

Button Lockdown

Prevent users from accessing unauthorized applications by restricting button behavior to prevent actions. You can also re-map a button to a different app. For more information, see EnterpriseExtFileSystem configuration service provider.
