About importing and exporting .gpx data

You can import data into MapPoint through a .gpx file. .Gpx is an industry-standard file format for recording GPS navigation data. If your GPS navigation device has the capability to record data and save it as a .gpx file, you can import that data into MapPoint. If you're not sure if your GPS device has the capability to record data in the .gpx file format, check the documentation that came with your device, or check the manufacturer's website.

When you export information from MapPoint, you can create a .gpx data file that you can use on your GPS navigation device or on a website such as Bing Maps.

Types of data that are imported or exported

When you import .gpx data into MapPoint, the following types of information are displayed on the map if they were included in the .gpx source file. When you export .gpx data, MapPoint exports the following types of information.

Data type

Description

Metadata

Information about the .gpx file, author, keywords, bounds of the coordinates covered in the file, and copyright restrictions, which may be important if you share .gpx data with other people on the Web.

Waypoints

A collection of stand-alone points with no sequential relationship, such as pushpin locations, business addresses, points of interest, or named features on a map with no associated route or trail. Waypoints can include latitude, longitude, and elevation; location name, address, city, postal code, phone number, comment, description, data source, link to the Web, type, and more.

Routes

An ordered list of points, including directions to reach each destination. For example, you can plan a route in MapPoint and then export the trip information to your GPS navigation device. Routes can include all of the information available for each point on the route, as well as the name of the route, comments, description of the route, source of data, links to the Web, the GPS route number, type, and a list of all waypoints on the route.

Trails

An ordered list of points recorded on your GPS navigation device and then imported into MapPoint. Trails can include all of the information available for each point on the trail, as well as the name of the trail, comments, description of the trail, source of data, links to the Web, the GPS trail number, type, and a trail segment. A trail segment holds a list of points that are logically connected in order.

Additional information

When you export .gpx data, MapPoint includes search results and pushpin information.

Notes

  • When you export data to a .gpx file, MapPoint does not include territory data. For example, if you export data that contains a territory, the boundaries of the territory, name of the territory, names of people associated with a territory, and all similar territory-specific information will not be included in the .gpx data file.
