Monitoring Pack Purpose

Applies To: System Center 2012 - Operations Manager

The monitoring pack creates monitoring rules, a set of views, and a template used to insert WS-Management/SMASH compliant devices into Operations Manager for monitoring. The template, placed in the authoring pane (node), delivers the ability to discover WS-MAN and SMASH devices. A periodic discovery rule will determine if a WS-Management device is SMASH compliant. Another rule will associate the SMASH device to a Windows computer.

The features of this monitoring pack include:

  1. Enables discovery and monitoring of WS-Management/SMASH compliant devices via a management pack template

  2. Scans IP ranges, subnets or list of IP addresses searching for compliant devices

  3. Device health determined through WS-Management ping

  4. Device health state rolls up to the appropriate computer’s health

  5. Supports both simple and Windows authentication modes

  6. Supports standard WS-Management communication options

  7. Supports Operations Manager resource pools

This functionality provides for out-of-band management (OOB). Out-of-band management is the use of a dedicated management channel for device maintenance. It allows a system administrator to monitor and manage servers and other network equipment by remote control regardless of whether the machine is running.
