Generic Application
A resource type in a failover cluster or server cluster that supports an application that was not originally designed to run on a cluster.
Generic Script
A resource type in a failover cluster or server cluster that supports an application controlled by a script that runs in Windows Script Host.
Generic Service
A resource type in a failover cluster or server cluster that supports a service that was not originally designed to run on a cluster.
global system key
A tool used to configure the startup key, a random, 128-bit, symmetric cryptographic key created at system startup and used to encrypt all of the user's symmetric cryptographic keys.
globally unique identifier
A 16-byte value generated from the unique identifier on a device, the current date and time, and a sequence number. It is used to identify a particular device, component, user, or session.
GPO
A collection of Group Policy settings, stored at the domain level as a virtual object that consists of a Group Policy container and a Group Policy template.
Group Policy
A feature introduced with Windows 2000 that allows administrators to enforce computer-specific and user-specific settings to domain-based computers.
Group Policy client-side extension
A component responsible for implementing a specific portion of Group Policy on the client computer. For example, Registry client-side extension processes registry-specific information within Group Policy.
Group Policy container
An object that is stored in Active Directory Domain Services and that is associated with a given Group Policy object.
Group Policy Management Editor
The editor window that is used to edit domain-based Group Policy in the Group Policy Management Console.
Group Policy object
A collection of Group Policy settings, stored at the domain level as a virtual object that consists of a Group Policy container and a Group Policy template.
Group Policy Object Editor
The Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in that is used to edit Local Group Policy settings.
Group Policy Software Installation
In Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008: an extension to the editor that accompanies the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC). The extension is used to deploy software packages by using a domain-based Group Policy object. In Windows Server 2003 and earlier: An extension to the Group Policy Object Editor; formerly called "Application Deployment" or "Application Deployment Editor."
Group Policy template
Group Policy information that is stored on the sysvol share of all domain controllers within a domain.
GUID
